Cheapest SUVs
2024 Buick Envista

The new 2024 Buick Envista is a great value, even though it comes from a semi premium brand. The Envista, including destination charges, starts at only $23,495 with a sleek crossover coupe styling that is similar to a BMW X4 half the price.
The Envista is the first model for Buick and its name. It sits below the smaller Buick Encore SUV. The Envista is stylish both inside and outside. It has an 11-inch screen for infotainment and an 8-inch display for the driver, all under one pane of clear glass.
Envista has a lot of space too. The sloping roof reduces the amount of cargo room, but it is still a good deal more than its Chevy Trax sibling. The Envista, like its Chevy counterpart, is powered by a three-cylinder 1.2-liter engine with 137 horsepower.
It’s paired to a six speed continuously variable six speed automatic transmission that drives the front wheels. The Envista is not designed for off-roading or speed, but it looks fantastic and the price can’t be beat continuously variable automatic transmission.
“It can be challenging to find an affordable SUV that doesn’t compromise on features and technology. Having personally test-driven numerous models over the years, I’ve experienced firsthand how automakers have strived to balance affordability with advanced technology and comfort.
Although upgrades often come with a higher price tag, there are still several models that manage to offer desirable features without breaking the bank.”
2024 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Chevrolet Trailblazer offers a spacious rear seat and a comfortable ride compared to other subcompact avto. Chevrolet Trailblazer, a five-seater SUV that is available in four trim levels. The most popular model is the LT FWD which has a 1.2L I3 Turbo and Front Wheel Drive.
It starts at $25,595. The Trailblazer can be expected to achieve 29 MPG city driving and 31 MPG highway.
Overall Assessment
The new 2024 Chevrolet Trailblazer is a subcompact SUV with an aerodynamic design and chiseled sheetmetal. It’s a great choice for SUV shoppers who care about appearance. The Trailblazer has a cargo space that is one of the largest in the class.
The Trailblazer has a larger cargo area than competitors such as the Hyundai Kona or Mazda CX-30. The Trailblazer also has a spacious second row with greater rear legroom than Subaru Crosstrek. The SUV comes in a trim called Activ, which offers excellent visibility from the driver’s seat as well as light off-road capabilities.
The Chevy engine is not very powerful. It has two three-cylinder turbocharged engines, one with only 137 horsepower while the other with 155 hp. CX-30s and Crosstreks have stronger engines that improve acceleration on freeways and possibility.
The Volkswagen Taos has a better ride and the CX-30 cabin is more luxurious. If space is important, then the Trailblazer deserves attention. The Trailblazer is a great value because of its capacity, as well as the top scores it has received from both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
“Having personally driven several of these affordable SUVs, I can share insights that go beyond the specs. For instance, the 2024 Hyundai Kona’s ride quality truly stands out. Its smooth handling and responsive steering made city driving a breeze, something that you might not grasp from just reading about its features. My weekend trip in the Kona, loaded with camping gear, demonstrated its surprisingly ample cargo space, an aspect that often concerns potential SUV buyers.”
2024 Chevrolet Trax

Chevrolet offers not just one but also two affordable small to. Chevy’s new Trax is a much better value after a short hiatus. This Trax looks much better and is larger than its Trailblazer or predecessor. It also has a more modern, chiseled look. The base model is only $21,495 including destination, and the 2RS trim and Activ start at (just below) $25,000. The Trax is the third cheapest on the market.
The base models come with an 8-inch screen, while the Trailblazer comes standard with an 11-inch display, which is compatible with both Apple CarPlay as well as Android auto connectivity.
The dated interior is just as attractive as the exterior, even though there are plenty of grays and blacks (as in most this size). The interior of the Trax is similar to that of the Trailblazer, despite being about 4.5″ longer and having a size close to the Honda HR-V.
What’s the only downside to this car? The Trax is currently only available with a 1.2-liter engine that produces 137 horsepower, which shares the same base model Trailblazer. Performance, therefore, will not be spectacular. The Trax is a great way to get more for your money.
“Reflecting on my own experiences, I remember test-driving the 2024 Buick Envista. The sleek crossover styling reminded me of a BMW X4, but at half the price. It’s not just about aesthetics; the driving experience was smooth, with the car handling urban streets with ease. The interior, equipped with an 11-inch screen for infotainment and an 8-inch display for the driver, felt premium, especially considering its price point.”
2024 Hyundai Kona

Hyundai still has 2023 Konas on the dealer lot, but 2024 models have already been redesigned with a more flashy design, larger footprint, and most importantly, more space. The new model is more spacious and has a higher starting price.
However, the base SE trim starts at $24,100, which means you will pay about $1,000 more. Fortunately, you can easily see where all the money went. The interior of the Kona is also upgraded. In addition to its futuristic exterior with accent lighting and other upgrades, it has a lot more features.
Two 12.3″ screens for infotainment and instrumentation are integrated in a glass expanse on top of the sleek dashboard. With all seats folded, the new Kona has a much bigger back seat than its predecessor. The total cargo volume is also higher, from 45.8 cubic feet last year, to 63.7 with the entire set of seats down. Blind-spot monitor is now an optional feature, and a few less driver-assist functions are included.
The engine bay has remained the same, with a standard 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine delivering 147 horsepower and an optional turbocharged turbocharged 1.5-liter engine generating 190 horsepower.
Both engines can deliver up to 31 combined mpg, while the turbocharged turbo delivers up to 28. AWD comes as an option on both. The Kona remains a fun little SUV despite its increased size.
“During my time with the 2024 Chevrolet Trailblazer, what stood out most was its spacious second row and cargo space. Compared to its peers like the Hyundai Kona or Mazda CX-30, the Trailblazer offers more room, which is a significant factor for families. While its engine may not be the most powerful in its class, the vehicle’s safety ratings from NHTSA and IIHS add to its appeal, particularly for those prioritizing safety.”
2024 Hyundai Venue

The Hyundai Venue is one of the few cars that looks and feels as cute or fun. The 2024 Hyundai SE trim is available with a front-wheel-drive (FWD), 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 121 horsepower. It also comes at a very affordable price and includes a lot of standard features.
This small SUV is both the most affordable and the smallest SUV available. It’s the exact same size at 159.1″ long as a Mini Hardtop with four doors. The Ford EcoSport is no longer available, so the Ford Venue is now the only small SUV. It looks like a large hatchback compared to some of its rivals.
Its high height allows for a great view, a comfortable upright seat, countless standard features and an amazingly spacious cargo space. The Venue has 18.7 cubic feet of storage behind the rear seats, or 31.9 when they are folded.
As you would expect from a small car, the back seat is quite small. However, smallness can be a good thing.
It is easy to park, handles well and returns 31 combined mpg. The best part is that shoppers can get a Venue at just a little over $21,000. This is what we would call an affordable SUV.
2024 Kia Soul

Kia Soul is a cheap SUV that lacks all-wheel drive (AWD) and has a low ground clearance. It also offers plenty of space and good driving dynamics. The Kia Soul, like the Venue, isn’t available with all-wheel (AWD). Its low ground clearance makes it a cheap SUV, although we wouldn’t call it anything else.
The Soul comes with Kia’s UVO touchscreen infotainment system, which is impressive. Its LX trim, at a MSRP of less than $20,000, also makes it hard to match. Its small footprint hides its spacious interior.
The Soul has more legroom in the rear than either a RAV4 and a Nissan Rogue. It also offers a lot of cargo room. The vehicle has 24.2 cubic feet behind the back seats, and 62.1 when the back seats are folded. This makes it the largest car on the list even though the exterior is small.
“As someone who has spent years analyzing and comparing various vehicles, I find the 2024 Kia Soul to be a remarkable blend of affordability and functionality. The Soul’s spacious interior contradicts its compact exterior, offering more legroom and cargo space than one might expect. This observation comes from comparing it side-by-side with other models in its category, assessing aspects like cabin layout and storage solutions.”
2024 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport

Mitsubishi is well aware that its success lies in low-cost and high-value segments of the automotive market. Outlander Sport provides a good example. The Outlander Sport, which has been updated and restyled numerous times since its debut in 2010, is still the oldest design of compact crossover on the market.
It feels old inside. The Outlander Sport is still popular, but the interior feels cheap, it’s not fun to drive and it only gets 26 combined mpg. It doesn’t seem very appealing to you, does it? There are some positive aspects to this product.
Mitsubishi’s standard AWD is a rare feature, and it costs more elsewhere. (Notably, a redesigned Subaru Crosstrek 2024 will cost about $1,000 extra.) It also has a stylish design, which was updated last in 2021.
The company also offers one of best warranties available in the market, including a five-year or 60,000 mile limited warranty, plus a ten-year or 100,000 mile powertrain warranty, which is comparable to the ones offered by Hyundai and Kia.
2024 Nissan Kicks

Nissan briefly offered two low-cost crossovers. However, the Japanese manufacturer discontinued its old, uninspired Rogue Sport model last year. Fortunately, Nissan Kicks is still an affordable option for SUVs. Only a few SUVs are cheaper than the FWD Kicks’ base SE trim.
The Kicks is a stylish SUV with a coupe-like design. It also has easy-to use technology that includes Nissan Safety Shield 360, aka Nissan driver assistance features.
The Kicks is a fuel-efficient car, achieving up to 36 mpg on the highway and 33 mpg on the combined. The 1.2-liter, four-cylinder, 122 horsepower engine is paired with a CVT, but the car handles well.
The Kicks is spacious up front, too. But the rear seat may be its weak point. The rear seat is one of the smallest in its class. When the rear seats are folded down, the cargo space between heated seats front seats and behind the seat is enormous at 25 cubic feet.
2024 Toyota Corolla Cross

The Toyota Corolla Cross SUV is the perfect example of how the SUVs are taking over the automotive market. The Corolla Cross is a low-cost SUV that looks to be the future. The Corolla Cross is more practical in every aspect than its compact sedan counterpart.
It also offers a good amount of space for cargo and a wide range of safety features including adaptive cruise control. The Corolla Cross is stylish too.
Interior of the Corolla Cross is plainer. While cargo space is adequate, it’s a bit small for an SUV (it is almost one foot longer than the roomier Kia Soul). Corolla Cross shares its 169 horsepower 2.0-liter engine with its sedan sibling, though the engine is noisy and coarse in both cars.
Toyota’s 2023 Corolla Cross Hybrid is smoother, more quiet and powerful, but also costs more. It represents a lesser value purchase. This little crossover still has the long-standing reputation of Toyota for reliability, and it comes with a lot of features that you can’t get anywhere else at this price. You should take it for a spin.
2024 Volkswagen Taos

The Volkswagen Taos is a compact SUV that translates the styling from the German automaker’s large SUVs to a smaller, more affordable package. The Taos is surprisingly larger in the back than the Tiguan, and has almost as much space for cargo (27.9 cubic feet behind the rear seat and 65.9 total compared to 33.0 and 65.3 respectively). It also lacks the tiny third row of its big brother.
The Taos cabin is modern, sophisticated and similar to the Buick Envista. However, some of the materials used in the interior feel cheaply made. The standard infotainment display is 6.5 inches, but an optional 8 inch unit is available.
Many active standard safety features come standard, including adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitor. These two options would be extra in other SUVs of this price.
It’s not as powerful as the Golf’s 1.5-liter four-cylinder, which produces 158 horsepower, and it isn’t as agile a driver, but AWD is an option. AWD models only get 27 mpg, while FWD gets 31 combined mpg. The Taos offers a spacious, stylish vehicle with a lot of standard equipment.
2024 Honda HR‑V

- Spacious, comfortable cabin
- Smooth ride with peppy performance
- Safety and Driver-assistance technologies standard suite
Considerations
- It doesn’t have a turbocharged motor like many key competitors
- No hybrid available
Combined Mileage: 27 – 28 mpg
Overview
Honda HR-V is a small SUV that stands out from the crowd with its European-inspired design, spacious interior and fun personality. Honda HR-V comes in three trim levels. It is a five-seater.
Sport AWD is the most popular model, starting at $29,000 and featuring a 2.0L I4 and optional all standard all wheel drive. The HR-V should deliver up to 25 MPG city driving and 30 on the highway.
2024 Hyundai Tucson

The Hyundai Tuscon is a good car, not just because of its slick design and 10-year warranty. It’s a car that most will find acceptable, with a good suspension and an easy handling. The hybrid drivetrain is also appealing to those who want to cut down on their gas costs.
Gas-powered 4-cylinders with 187 horsepower and 178 pounds-feet of torque are enough for the majority. An eight-speed automatic is used four cylinder engine to send power to wheels.
2024 Buick Encore GX

The 2024 buick encore gx shares many of the smartly-designed exterior features with the Envista. This makes us wonder if we should continue to consider the brand as irrelevant in America.
The Encore GX is the smallest Buick in the lineup. However, it comes with some of the most desirable features, including wireless Apple CarPlay and large digital displays. Two turbocharged three cylinder engines are available.
The larger one has 155 horsepower. If you choose AWD instead of CVT, you’ll get a 9-speed automatic transmission.
